How often should my sprinkler system components be inspected?

Regular inspections are crucial to ensure your sprinkler system functions properly. Here's a general guideline:

  • Quarterly: Mechanical devices
  • Semiannually: Vane and pressure switch devices
  • Annually: Complete system test (low flow, alarm, trip, deluge, pre-action valves, antifreeze, fire pump), backflows and backflow forward flow test
  • Every 5 years: Internal inspections, standpipe flow tests, sprinklers in harsh environments (test or replace) and gauge replacements
  • Every 20 years: Dry sprinklers (test or replace)
  • Every 25 years: Fast-response sprinklers (test or replace), then every 10 years
  • Every 50 years: Standard response sprinklers (test or replace), then every 10 years
Do all sprinkler heads activate at the same time during a fire? No, sprinkler heads do not all discharge simultaneously. Each sprinkler head operates independently and is triggered only when exposed to a specific level of heat from a fire. This targeted activation helps control the fire efficiently while minimizing water damage to unaffected areas.
Who performs Bassett’s sprinkler installations, service and inspections? Bassett’s sprinkler installations, service and inspections are performed by skilled pipe fitters from the Pipefitters Local 120 Union, ensuring high-quality workmanship and adherence to industry standards.
Can investing in a fire protection system save my company money in the long term? Yes, investing in a fire protection system can lead to significant long-term savings. While there is an initial cost, these systems can reduce insurance premiums, minimize potential property damage and help avoid costly liabilities associated with fire-related losses, including damage to assets and risk to human life.
What should I do if my fire protection system fails? If your fire protection system fails, contact us immediately for an inspection and repairs. A malfunctioning system can put lives and property at risk, so it’s crucial to address the issue as soon as possible. Our team will diagnose the problem, restore functionality and ensure your system complies with safety regulations. In the meantime, consider implementing temporary fire watch procedures to maintain safety until repairs are completed.
